Tips For Making the Process Simple and Pain-Free
Testing a mobile app can seem overwhelming, particularly if you are not tech-savvy. However, here are some steps you can take to do a thorough job of the process.
Confirm the basics
There’s no need to panic if you’ve never been in charge of testing a mobile app before. Your mobile app developer and their team should have done initial testing before passing the final review over to you. A good development team will have done as much as possible to ensure that things are functioning correctly from a technical standpoint before asking you to review and test your new mobile app.
The most important goal for clients during this step in the mobile app development process is to ensure that everything you expected to see is there and that it’s showing up correctly. Review the visual branding–logos, colours, taglines, fonts, etc. and ensure it aligns with your guidelines. Ensure that all of the features you expected to be included are there. Review the content that’s showing up and confirm it’s displaying as expected.
Get familiar with the app
Do not speed through this step. Take some time over a couple of days and become familiar with its features and functionality.
Create a list of tasks
Create a list of tasks (using a spreadsheet would be helpful) that your residents would want the app to be able to perform. For example, pretend your kids want to go swimming at the local pool. Check all pools in your area, look for their open times and family or kids-only swim time. Can you efficiently gather all the information needed fairly quickly? Make note of any stumbling blocks you experience along the way.
Test the app systematically
Follow your list of tasks step-by-step and test each feature of the app. If you encounter any issues or bugs, take note of them. Be as detailed as you can when making a record of what is not working, your development team will want specifics that they can test.
Get feedback
Ask other users (particularly any colleagues not involved in your mobile app project) to test the app and provide feedback. This can help you identify any issues that you might have missed. They may use the app differently than you do. All this user feedback is important.
Put yourself in your residents’ shoes
Remember, the fact that you’re not tech-savvy can actually be a benefit during the testing phase. Simply try using the app like you would any new mobile app that you’ve downloaded on your phone. The more you can put yourself in a potential user’s shoes, the more likely you’ll uncover potential issues or determine appropriate changes to ask for from your development team.
Testing a mobile app is an ongoing process–you may need to continue testing and refining the app over time to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of your residents.
